About the Author

Dr. Daney Dumdeang

Born in the Ranote District of Songkhla Province, Thailand, Dr. Daney Dumdeang’s journey from a reflective youth in a small village to a pioneer of Thai cuisine in the American Northwest is defined by resilience and mindfulness. The third child of Mr. Khai and Mrs. Intra Dumdeang, he navigated early instability before finding direction through a profound encounter with a Buddhist teacher, leading to decades of monastic life where he cultivated the discipline and scholarship that would later ground his culinary philosophy. Transitioning from the monkhood to life in the United States, Dr. Dumdeang channeled this spiritual foundation into a passion for healthy living, eventually establishing himself as a celebrated chef and restaurateur in Portland, Oregon, where he continues to share the art of authentic, heart-centered Thai cooking.
